Writing to Heal
Story Sessions
Night One: Finding Your Voice
We'll ease into expressive writing through gentle exercises and collaborative prompt creation. You'll discover your own unique way of accessing memories and emotions through writing, and leave with tools to continue your practice at home.
Night Two: Sharing Our Stories
Building on our first evening's work, we'll explore the transformative power of writing in a supportive circle. For those who feel called to share, there's space for that. For those who prefer to keep their words private, that's perfectly welcome too.
What to Bring
If you have a favorite notebook and writing utensil, please bring it along. Otherwise, writing materials will be provided for you. (Although handwriting is encouraged, fully-charged laptops are OK, too.) You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snack, too.
We encourage wearing comfortable clothes that allow for gentle stretching and movement.
What’s Included
You’ll experience a calm, healing environment at the beautiful and historic Abigail Stuart House. We’ll have a separate quiet space for emotional recovery.
Light refreshments (herbal tea, water) will be provided. Notebooks and pens will be on hand, but you’re also welcome to bring your own.
Tell Your Story, Heal Your Life
What It Is:
A guided journey through your own story
A way to finally make sense of experiences that have felt impossible to process
A toolkit for turning your 3 AM thoughts into actual insights
Two evenings of genuine connection with yourself and others who get it (although you never have to share your writing unless you want to!)
What It Isn’t:
A grammar workshop (autocorrect can handle that)
A creative writing class (though you might surprise yourself!)
Group therapy (though healing definitely happens)
A "dear diary" session (we go way deeper)
FAQs
-
In a story session, you’ll gather with other people who want to learn to heal themselves and find meaning in their experiences through expressive writing — writing in a free, uncensored way.
In each session, you’ll learn how to tap into the deepest places within yourself. Learn more about the scientifically proven benefits of expressive writing.
-
The term "expressive writing" was coined by Dr. James Pennebaker, a social psychologist and researcher who discovered the emotional, mental, and even physical benefits of writing about difficult experiences with the goal of finding meaning in them.
Think of expressive writing as less "this happened" and more "here's what I understand about what happened." It's not exactly journaling or diary-keeping; it's more of a therapeutic practice. But, like journaling and writing in a diary, it's simple and uncomplicated.

Story Sessions take place in Olympia, Washington at the beautiful Abigail Stuart House.
We hope to offer online retreats later on in 2025 for those outside of the Olympia area.
-
Each retreat costs $125 ($95 with an early bird discount!) and includes a notebook , pen, and light refreshments. You’ll gain an understanding of how to add a writing practice to your life to transform your past challenges into healing insights.
-
Yes! We believe everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the healing practice of expressive writing with a supportive community. We offer two scholarships per session. Apply here.
-
If you can put words on paper (or type them into your laptop or phone), you're already a writer. The whole idea of being a "real writer" is just unnecessary gatekeeping. Everyone has stories to tell, and the simple act of showing up to tell yours makes you as real a writer as anyone else.
-
Expressive writing can bring up a lot of unresolved emotions. That’s both the challenge and the beauty of it. By writing, you are discovering and acknowledging your own hidden wells of strength.
Our retreats provide safe spaces to break away from the group for quiet reflection. You will also never be required to share your writing with other retreat members — the decision to share (or not) is yours alone.
-
We understand that plans change! If you need to cancel more than two weeks before the workshop, you'll receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations made between one and two weeks before a workshop will receive a 50% refund. While we can't offer refunds for cancellations made less than a week before the workshop, you're welcome to transfer your spot to someone else — just let us know their details at least 24 hours before the event.
Introducing Your Guide
I’m Karen Lunde, your guide on this healing journey of personal transformation. I’ve been a professional writer for most of my adult life. I founded one of the internet's first online writing communities back in the '90s, long before "virtual learning" was cool.
Since then, I've worn many hats: video game journalist, digital managing editor at Macmillan Publishers (where I worked with rockstars like Grammar Girl), and content leader at ID.me, creating articles that reached over 100 million readers.
I discovered the transformative power of writing during my own life-changing journey. Writing gave me clarity when I needed it most, ultimately leading me to leave a difficult situation and find my true home here in the Pacific Northwest.
I've called Olympia home for ten years now, throwing myself into our vibrant community through The Olympia Peace Choir (where I served on the board for four years) and the Olympia Musical Theatre Singers. This quirky, beautiful, artistic city has my whole heart.
I don't believe in shoulds and musts. Some writing teachers insist you must write daily, but I've learned that the most powerful writing happens when your heart has something to say.
I create safe spaces where stories can emerge naturally, where transformation happens on your own timeline.
My superpower is empathy — not just listening, but truly understanding. I know that everyone has a story worth telling, and sometimes the simple act of putting pen to paper can change everything.
Foraging stories
Chanterelle mushrooms are nearly impossible to cultivate — they can only be foraged in the wild. The same is true for your stories. You can’t force them into existence; you find them in the wilds of your experiences and memories. Chanterelle Story Sessions can help you set off on your adventure of self-discovery.
